Step 3: Adding Pages

What is a page?

Pages make up the actual website that people visit.  Each page you make is the physical page that people will load in their browser.

Adding a new page

1. Open the 'Pages and Content' section

2: Select the folder that you want to create the page in or add a new category.

3: Click on 'Add Page' to add a new item in the middle section and then select it.

4: Enter a name for this page where it has "A New Item".  This is the name of the physical web page that people will visit.

Pages have special restrictions for the page name to ensure everything works properly and displays nicely.

  • The page name must not contain spaces, use the underscore instead (e.g my_page_name).  If we allowed you to use spaces when people visit the page the address would look like 'my%20page%20name' since spaces are replaced by the '%20'.  Not very pretty!

  • You must use only letters or numbers (or a combination of both) for your page name.  The underscore '_' and hyphen '-' are also allowed.  You cannot use any other characters.

  • We recommend that you always use all lowercase page names for consistency.  Linux servers which are commonly used, mean file names are case sensitive!  So if you have a page mypage.php and you give someone a link to MyPage.php it will not work.  For this reason if you always use lowercase, you always know to give people lowercase links and will never have a problem.

5: Enter a Title, Description and some Keywords for the page.

The Title is what shows up at the top of the browser window

The Description is what shows up when your page appears in a search engine

The Keywords are used by some search engines to help identify your page, and are used for internal site searching.

When entering keywords, enter variations and keyphrases separated by commas.  For example:

website builder, web builder, content management, cms, content management system, diy website

Please see the Search Engine Optimization document for full details.

6. Edit the page contents using the Rich Text Editor.  Press  to open the rich text editor for this page.  The Rich Text Editor will open up as shown, however since its a new page there wont be any text in the content area.

The content area is the area between the toolbars and path structure which you can see down the bottom.  This is where you will type all of your content, insert images, links and more!

Try typing similar to the above the image.  Use the style pulldown to change text to headings or paragraphs.

It is important to try and use styles all throughout your pages, rather than coloring text individually, underlining text, bolding and italicizing text.  This is because the template controls the look of these styles, so you can easily change the look of these styles across your entire site.  If you use specific colors and formatting here you can only change it by coming back and editing this page.

Using the toolbar you can do many things to edit your content.

Insert image from the image library.
Insert file from the file library.
Insert hyperlink.
Unlink the current selection.
Insert Table.
Strikeout text.  This text will not show on your website.
Insert Symbol
Paste Normal.
Paste Unformatted Text.  Removes all formatting.
Paste From Word.  Cleans the pasted information, useful when pasting from word or other websites.
Clean Html.  This removes bad formatting after you paste from word or other websites.
Toggle Html mode.  Recommended only for advanced users.
Save the content.  Your website will not be updated until you save the page as well.

7. Once you have edited your content, save it by pressing  or pressing ctrl  s on your keyboard.

8. Close the Rich Text Editor once it is saved with the 'X' in the top right corner of the rich text editor (Be careful not to close the entire CMS).

9.  You will now be back to the Page Settings screen.  Before we can preview the page we need to save the settings here by pressing the  again.

10.  Now we can preview the live page by pressing .  The website page will open in a new window showing us the current page.  At this stage we havn't set up a template or built our menu so it won't look complete.

Editing your pages:  Now that you have created the page you can edit this page at any time by continuing on from step 6.  You can edit the contents of any pages you have created.

Step 3 is now complete, you can repeat this process to add as many pages as you like.
